In that case, I would recrimp that RJ11 connector or use a new one. Sounds like your cable has a continuity problem.

Well I guess I've been a bit unlucky with my order. I have now discovered that the power cable to the power suply is "flaky". When I unpacked it the other day I noticed a little kink in it but made nothing of it. Well it turns out to be slightly broken (works in one position, move it and power is lost - connections at Ocelot are fine).

So I chopped it about 3 feet from the Ocelot and things seem fine now. Ocelot works great when it has power to it!

Aaah, the pleasures of home automation

I was reading these posts before I received my Ocelot and was hoping it would'nt happen to me to.

Guess what?

I got mirrored! (my x-10 interface cable is defect.)

Can those of you that received bad X10 cables e-mail me (kbarrett@appdig.com) with where you purchased your Ocelots from?

Also, e-mail me your address and phone numbers so I can get you the right cables.

BTW: Love Canadians!

To add to the "ADI loves Canadians" comment from Kevin, here is a convincing post from Dan Boone himself:

Just received my ocelot from let's automate in the UK and it's got the connection cable wired wrong as well.

Not ideal that it was shipped out that way, but on a more positive note, thank goodness for this forum otherwise I'd be scratching my head for a couple of days and sending it back as I'd never have thought the cable was wrong.

Well you can add me to the list twice. I just received my second miss wired x10 cable. I ordered my Ocelot from Worthington Distribution. I was not able to get x10 communication working and called ADI. After some debugging over the phone, which by the way included making sure I was using the included “straight through” cable, Kevin Barrett sent me out a second Ocelot. Well I tried that one and still no dice. So, what then? I started snooping around the support site and found this thread. I then wanted to make sure I understood how a regular phone cable was wired, and there it was, both cables provided in the Ocelots I received were the same as the phone cable, incorrect. So, I took one of my spare 6ft phone cables, clipped off one end and put a new one on in the opposite direction. Val ah, all was now working. I won’t tell you how much the new crimper and RJ11 ends cost me at Home Depot, because it is really my frustration and time that has totaled to a dear price. Please also note that I was shipped my second Ocelot directly from ADI after the stock on hand was checked for correct cables (see the post on this thread dated 12th from Dan).

I have to say I am a bit disappointed in ADI. Mistakes are made; I know I have made plenty of them. However, when you keep making the same mistake it doesn’t bode well for the confidence others will have in you.

I am still excited about my purchase, I just hope it will be smooth sailing from here on out. So, what should I do with these long phone cables?

We now have 9 reports of bad cables. We have shipped 400 Ocelots during the timeframe.
9 out of 400 is a definite problem.
5000 Ocelots shipped, and now we run into this.. arrrgghh!

We buy the cables pre-configured, and have not had any problems prior to late last year.
I don't think we changed cable suppliers, but I'm going to check our purchasing records.
I'll have production pull all cables from stock and test every cable.

This forum is beneficial for our customers and ADI. With phone calls, it takes a little longer to compile trends. With this site, we get immediate feedback. I'll post the results of our cable testing Monday night.

Dan

Sure looks like lightning struck you twice. I guess ADI should take another good look at the stock on hand. Kevin will probably have a record of where he took the one he sent you, and see if it was part of the verified stock.

Cable Update:

Pulled 900 cables from stock.
67 were mis-wired.

I'll contact our suppliers & ship them replacement cables for any distributor stock.

Dan,

FYI: Another one to add to the list.

My Ocelot was purchased from worthington and shipped on the 2nd of Feb 2004. This was on backorder for over a Month so this wasn't existing stock worthington had for ages.
The RJ12 was a rollover cable. Clipped one end and re-clamped an RJ12 as a straight through and all is working fine.

I've sent an email to Kevin with the details.

p.s Also got my 50Hertz PIC chip (for Australia, 240V/50Hz) today. Excellent support! Thank you. With the new PIC and the fixed cable, everything is working PERFECTLY!

Thanks,

Ross.

I've just bought my first Ocelot from the US for use here in Australia. The computer interface (CM12AU) has an RJ11 connection and the cable that came with the unit is RJ12 on both ends. Could someone please give me the pinouts for the cable so I can crimp a new one.

The CM12AU is not an interface that you can use with the Ocelot. This unit has a serial port and its own controller firmware (like the CM11A). What you need is the 220V/50Hz equivalent of the TW-523, which is a straight TTL-level to powerline interface designed for controllers like the Ocelot and other 3rd party products that use the X10 protocol.
