Hi all,

I just got an SECU16 and just now realized that the power supply that came with my Ocelot is a 200ma one. So I need a new on which can handle the Ocelot, this new module plus a couple more modules that I'm sure I will get eventually.

Can someone recommend a specific power supply? I want to make sure I'm getting one with the right specifications.

Thanks for the help.

Jeff

Jeff,

I use 1000 mW AC units from Radio Shack. Should be enough to power an Ocelot and several other Secu modules ( or a Leopard and maybe 1 Secu module ).

Any common 12 Vac wall wart type adapter can be used. Although you can also use a 12 Vdc supply, if this is just a cheap wall wart (and not a regulated power supply) then you are better off using a 12 Vac.

Figure about 200 mA for an Ocelot and about the same for a SECU type module (SECU16, SECU16I or SECU16IR). Bobcats only need about 30 mA each. If you plan on getting RLY8XA modules, these draw more: about 800 mA each. There is no problem with using more then one power supply with these modules.

I use a Laptop style switching power supply. They are generally available reasonably from electronics surplus stores and have lots of capacity.

The only thing to watch out for with laptop power supplies is that they can sometimes be notorious X10 signal suckers. I had a Toshiba supply that killed all X10 on its branch circuit. Just make you test your X10 signal quality before and after. But if they work, you can often find laptop supplies that will give you 2 amps or more. Some of these can put out 16 to 18 volts, which might be a bit high or right on the limit.

Guy - mine puts out 12vdc at 2 amps. Since it's plugged into my UPS which, in turn, is plugged into an X10 filter, signal sucking is not a problem...

Guys,

Thanks for the replies!

I found an old Microsoft wall wart. It is listed as a Class 2 power supply rated at 28W, 12V, and 1.3A.

Can I just use this? Being over 1A, would it harm my Ocelot if it was the only thing connected to it?

Thanks again,

Jeff

A Microsoft wall wart? It must be from one of their few hardware products... Sure, that could work. There is no problem with the 1.3 A rating; this is just the available power. The devices will only draw what they need, so you now have enough power for the Ocelot and several modules.

Thanks Guy.

Yeah, its from an Old Microsoft Sidewinder joystick that my kids haven't used in years. See, that's why I don't throw anything out.
