I have been trying to use a SECU16 as a controller for my sprinklers, and in the process, I probably burned up my SECU16.

I am using a 24VT transformer from my furnace to control 5 electric valves. The longest run worked for a day or so and now will not turn off. There is continuity between the relay connectors even though the software tells me that that relay is open. I'm assuming that there is too much current for the relay.
Is this correct?

Thanks;

Don

That is probably the problem. Do a search on the forum for "sprinkler" and you will find several discussions about this. The problem is with the current spike that the sprinkler's solenoid coil induces in the relay's contacts when the solenoid is turned off. You might be able to get the relay to unstick by snapping it with your fingers a few times. If that works, then look into using small external relays to avoid damaging the SECU16 relays.

Don,

I would recommend using a RLY8XA for this application. The relays on it will be able to handle the load.

I have had similar problems trying to use the SECU16 relays for other than really small loads. I now use Elk relays (Elk-912) with the SECU16 for a number of applications around the house. Never had a problems.
