I've got an XTB-IIR (coupler/amplifier/tw523 emulator) in a dryer outlet very near my fuse box. That (now) requires my Ocelot to be nearish to the XTB-IIR as it is connected by the RJ11-like cable. Formerly it was in my work room 70' away, and reliable X10 across the house was a perennial problem.

Now, of course, access to the Ocelot is much less convenient. I've followed and thoroughly read the many posts on using the Lantronix EPS1, serial servers, etc.

Here's some alternatives.

1a), a dedicated wireless laptop (of which I have several) that can run windows or ubuntu, with c-max or javaocelot/houseMonkey (which I'm having NO luck with!). This is not terribly energy efficient, and feels a bit inelegant/overkill.
1b) same as above, with wired homeplug ethernet which I use and love.
For (1a) or (1b) I'd probably use VNC or a variation to be able to work comfortably from my work room.

2) Relocate the Ocelot back to my work room and run what might be a 70' RJ11 cable to from the Ocelot to the TW523 interface on the XTB-IIR. Making the cable look ok outside my house might be tricky, and i'm less than keen with trying to fish it through walls.

3) Use the Phonex phone line power line adapters to bridge the TW523 signal across the powerline. This has the potential to fail spectacularly as the TW523 RJ11 signal is not actually a phone signal, it just 'conveniently' uses the same cable. I see nothing Googling that it is obvious this would or wouldn't work, and can't think of a cheap way to test it w/risking equipment.

4a) use a serial adapter or print server. Can people respond with EXACTLY which models are known to work for them?
4b) use the wireless "Wibox" ones of above, again which models are known to work?

I like (2) if the run doesn't degrade the signal - other benefits- no additional hardware, no other computers to maintain, no drivers to install.

What's the maximum length that this signal could run? If necessary, I could cobble up a little amplier from an inverter or transistor.

Comments? Any other alternatives I've missed?

Thanks, H.B.

I prefer the network (or print) server method since it allows access from more then one device easily, and you will usually want to install networking in many places in your home anyways (what...your dryer isn't networked? \:D ). I use the Lantronix EPS1 print server, and bought a bunch of these on ebay for real cheap.

I don't see how a phone line adapter could possibly work, since there is no phone-like signal here, and there are 3 separate signal lines between the Ocelot and the TW-523.

I have a Leopard in my great room and run Cat 5 wiring to structured wiring panel in another location. From the panel another Cat 5 wire runs to the kitchen desk where my TW523 is located. The two legs are jumped together and each leg is about 30- 35 feet (total 60-70 feet). It works just fine.

When I built my house, I did my own wiring. I am not sure how your house is wired for phone service but usually a four wire bundle is installed although if they installed Cat5 that is an eight wire bundle. If you have only one phone line, it only requires two of the 4/8 wires and the others are available for other uses. The easiest way to check this is to go to the demarcation point on the outside of the house where the phone line enters the house. Open the box and check what’s there. Good luck.
