I have spent hours on this, yet no better.

I have one USB-serial dongle, and (2) 4 port edgeports. They are installed fine, drivers good and assigned com ports. No matter where I try to plug in on the edgeports or native com ports, cmax reports "com port in use" always, forever. I have unistalled/re-installed, disabled, etc. I even went so far as to enable "hidden" devices to clear them out.
I also zeroed out the registry to renumber the serial ports. Nothing. Every time I reboot, every port is in use somehow.

Any ideas?

What happens if you try to open a serial port with another program? Something like Hyperterminal (or whatever is equivalent)? Does that show the ports as being busy?

Hyperterm tells me another program is using the port (for all of them, even native 1 & 2). I have also tried uninstalling, and adding the edgeports fresh. As soon as it installs, something tells windows it is using the newly installed ports.

I had everything working fin on this pc, then disconnected all the cable to move it. Upon re-install, this happened. I know there used to be an issue with which usb port was tied to the edgeport.

Thanks Guy.

Looks like you'll be on a hunt for whatever is opening those ports.

Did a quick google search & turned up this Process Explorer.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExp

When ya run it , click Find & enter \device\serial0

or to find all serial , just enter serial.

Good Luck
