Our church is assembling a simple AV system for use during services. The system will have two projectors and a 46" LCD displaying song lyrics, etc. for the congregation. A laptop will be the source for all of the content. No switching for sources, etc. The projectors have IR, RS232 and Ethernet connectivity (Sanyo PLC-XU115). The TV just has IR.

I'd like to find a simple way of assuring the projectors and LCD TV are 'off' or 'on'. I was thinking about putting two switches on the wall. One saying 'on/off' that was monitored by a simple controller (such as an ADI Ocelot) and another that might say 'day/night'. The first switch would turn on/off the displays and the second would set the projectors to their 'economy mode' when they are used during the evening when no ambient light is pouring through the windows.

I don't want to spend $2K on a control system for this limited scope, so what would you suggest? I'm a bit worried about IR remotes simply because they can be 'lost', dropped, etc.

Thanks in advance.

You can use an Ocelot and a SECU16 for this application. The Ocelot has a IR output to control your TV. The SECU16 has 8 inputs and 8 relay outputs. You can connect your switch to one of the SECU16 inputs and when the switch is flipped on, the Ocelot will turn the TV on, and then when the switch is off, turn the TV off.

Most projectors are controlled via Serial (RS232). You can also connect your Day/Night switch to a different input on the SECU16, so that when the switch is turn to day, the Ocelot will send the serial string to the projector putting it in Day mode, and when the switch is flipped to night, send the serial string to the projector putting it in economy mode.

You will also want to check for the existance of "discrete" on/off IR codes for the TV. The projectors, having serial control, probably have that. What is the TV brand and model?

Thanks for the suggestions. I was looking at the Ocelot, SECU16 and RS232 adapters as one choice. In looking at the manual, it seemed like the programming wouldn't be too complicated.

Guy good point about the TV. I have been through the challenges of on/off toggles with hand held remotes. We haven't bought the TV yet, so I could try and research their control options and perhaps that will help make the decision. I guess I could use some sort of other sensor into the secu16 and have the programming sense the state before sending the no/off command.

I'll start looking at the prices for the modules and perhaps by next week I could be up to my elbows in automation!!

Thanks again for your suggestions.

I would look for a TV with RS232 port to control. The commands typically have descrete on/off control, and you dont have to mess with learning remotes and sticking on IR sensors etc.
