I recently changed out my 12VDC power supply to a larger unit which would power all modules and some other items. I connected and powered up fine, however I didn't observe polarity of my terminals knowing that the ADI equipment is not sensitive to polarity. One item I forgot about that is sensitive is my external IR blaster which I built. This was connected to the Ocelots IR output port when I powered up the new power supply. About 5-10 min later I heard a pop from the IR blaster components, I then looked up at my Ocelot and no LEDs were on and the oh so familiar smell of burnt electronics was comming from the Ocelot. The other modules are still flashing and working fine. Assuming that the problem was at the IR port how many chips in the Ocelot could be damaged? All of them? I have ordered a replacement unit but if I can go another route I would like to save the money.

I don't know how much damage the external blaster might have caused, but I suspect that at least the output driver might have been blown. For the whole Ocelot to go dark, my bet would be that one of the tantalum capacitors would have blown. Look for one of the "orange blob" caps to have split in two or being partly missing. If you find one, indicate which part it is (such as C7) and I could tell you what value and voltage it should be.

I believe it is D4 and the part above that closer to the Z80 (capacitor?). Other than those parts I dont see any other burnt areas. I dont see any "orange blob" caps. When I plug in power the comm light comes on for about 2-3sec and then goes out. I dont think it was the new power supply. It is a high end regulated DC power supply putting out a solid 12.9VDC. Vicor VI-PAV1-EVU.

If possible, could you take a closeup digital picture of the damaged area and post it here?

I'm not sure how to insert a picture into the reply. Let me know how and I'll try.

It appears as if one of the rectifier diodes is toast.

You can upload pictures to a site like http://www.imageshack.us/ and then post the direct link they'll provide to your next post.

A blown rectifier diode should be easy to replace. I don't have an Ocelot in front of me but it is probably a common 1N4001 style part.

Finally got back to this. D4 L5 and C32 all appear to be damaged. D4 shows bad on my tester and L5 has one side of the device burnt off of the board. C32 may just be scorched, i cant tell if it is damaged. Are these easy enough to replace. When soldering should i remove the Z80? I would have the gun right next to the socket.

Don't use a soldering gun, use a small iron instead. I would avoid removing the cpu, too much chance for damaging it or the socket, unless you have the right tool.

I'll try and take a look over the next few days and let you know.
