I note that it is not directly possible to do an else if statement.

One way I propose it could be done is by:

if a=b then
...
jump to Line Y
if c=d then
...
Line Y

Is this the most appropriate way to simulate and else if statement.

Yes that's the best way. Internally, that is how higher level languages do it once compiled to machine code.
