I’ve just purchased a house with a Leopard home automation system in it and the previous owner has misplaced all the instructions and disks. I managed to download CMax and the manual for the Leopard but have had little success programming it so far.

However, last night rain caused a circuit breaker to trip plunging our house into darkness. When we turned the power back on, the Leopard backlight came on permanently, the IR/X10 permanently on (green), and the Active flashing green about once every 5 seconds. The display has random characters appearing on it constantly and will no longer communicate via the serial cable. I get an occasional connction that shows the firmware version randomly as 8.23/99 or 8.23/99 or 8.23/104. When 104 appears, I get a short burst of connectivity.

I have no idea where the owner purchased this device but would appreciate some support. Are there any tests I can run? I've tried a new serial cable and checked supply voltage.

I’m prepared to purchase new parts if possible (though it appears that only the Leopard II is available now) or have a service person look at it if I can find one in Australia.

The Active LED flashing once seems to indicate that the cpu is running but there is no valid executive loaded. Looks like the flash memory got corrupted somehow. Try and reload the executive to get it working again. You'll need to do the following:

Start up C-Max on your PC, then power off the Leopard. Now power the Leopard back up and immediately Use C-Max to "Attach to Controller" --> "Controller Utilities" --> "Reload controller Executive". You need to get the executive reload going within a few seconds of powering up the Leopard, and this might require a few tries. Once you have that done sucessfully, the program in the Leopard will have been cleared out and you should be able to connect to it and load a program once again.

Thanks, Guy. Based on your advice to others, I already tried that about 15 times without success. Once it appeared to complete the download but rebooted back to the same error state. I will persist and let you know the results.

Ok. An update. I tried and tried and retried downloading the executable. Most of the time the process would get stuck before it had started. Some times it would start, transfe for about 3 seconds, then hang for 10 minutes. Eventually (since I thought I had nothing to lose), I started the pocess and watched the RX light. Every time the TX light flashed twice without a response from the RX, I pulsed the power signal on the Leo. As soon as power was restored, the communication would continue. I continued this process until the executable was completed downloaded and the system restarted. I then used the same technique to load the program. I've tested it and everything seems to work fine.

I don't have much understanding of why it works but I've gained a new practice for PLCs!!

I'm still not confident that my Leo is completely healthy but time will tell. Thanks for your help, Guy. You gave me the confidence to persist.
