Anyone use one of these with their Ocelot????

I'm ordering one for my A/V receiver and was thinking 'Hey that would work with my Ocelot'.

Like Guy, I'm not using that particular unit but I do control my Leopard through a serial LAN server. My advice would be to go ahead and try it - it can open up a whole world of new possibilities.
The main control panel for my house automation is now a wireless Pocket PC and every other PC in the house can also take control. I rarely touch the Leopard now in fact I could replace it with an Ocelot.
The combination of an ADI controller, running 24/7, keeping it all going and PC-based control from anywhere inside (or even outside) the house is a great solution.

Lumpy, If you don't need hardware handshaking control for your A/V receiver, you may want to check out Guy's EPS1 solution. You can get them on ebay for cheap (5-10 bucks apiece). After years of reading his posts on the topic and wanting to do it, I finally ordered up a bunch of them and got them working over the holidays with my Ocelots.
I won't kid you though. You have to 'want it', there was quite a bit of cut and try and configuration stuff to fight through, but I finally got a procedure worked out to them them operational, and just had to repeat it to make the rest work. The "EZWEBCON" software provided by Lantronix is not so easy, but Guy's posts do forewarn about that. The EPS1 servers are also configurable via telnet, and in the end I developed telnet scripts to configure them into shape. And 5 bucks/port is cheaper than any other solution I can think of.
Chris,
I was unable to make the port re-direction work on my Windows 2000 PC using the latest Lantronix driver "Port redirector 4.0 (AKA 'CPR'), and the EPS1 servers. I did see some of the hand-shaking options in this version that you mentioned (and yes I made sure they were disabled/not used for ocelot) but 4.0 tries to 'detect' the Lantronix devices, and it can't auto-detect the EPS1s. Lantronix CPR 4.0 documentation is clear about that, but it doesn't imply that 4.0 and EPS1 won't work. Maybe it was just my setup, or a windows 2000 issue with 4.0, I dunno. 4.0 is more complicated and written on top of the .net 2.0 framework...so more moving parts.
However, they still have the 3.0 Redirector software on their website, and this working like a champ for me.

Have to agree, been using an EPS1 for over a year now with my Ocelot. Bought 6 of them on eBay for $25.00, one was bad so they they cost me $5.00 each. Such a good deal but got 4 sitting on the shelf until I can figure out a use for them. At least now there are no more trips to the basement, I can access my Ocelot from my office or den without a problem.

Is there a post somewhere that explains how to set-up one of these EPS1's. I know nothing about print servers but found plenty of these on ebay.
Thank you Don

This thread contains a lot of setup information:

Especially important is the "passflow" setting in the serial options.
Well that stuff is way over my head but I'm going to give it a shot anyway. I'm bidding on one on ebay and it looks like I might get it for a buck. Ive downloaded the redirector, ezconnect and a firmware update all the latest versions. Is this correct? I have a spare db 9 cable and a spare ethernet cable I can cut and splice together. I dont really have a network. Just a dsl modem connect to a wireless access point. What other hardware should I pickup to get this thing working?
Thanks Don

Does the wireless access point also include a hub or switch with weveral ports allowing you to connect wired network devices? Most do but there are exceptions. You will need something like that to connect the EPS1 to.
I have a little 5 port hub, I can install. I'm hoping I can get this going with xp pro. I see there some issues.

If the wireless access point does not have a built in router, then you will have trouble getting the hub connected because you only have a single, "public" IP address (provided by the ISP). You need a private network (LAN) in order to connect more devices. Could you post the exact model name and number of your wireless access point?
Its a old Lynksys wap-11.

That confirms that you have no LAN. Aside from your PC's WiFi LAN connection, does it also have a wired LAN jack (RJ-45)? If it does, then you could use that to create a local network. If not, is there room to add one?
The wireless access point has a bad power connection we were going to replace it anyway. I found a lynksys with a 4 port built in switch for $89. Is this the one I want? I did win the $1 bid on the print server so its now on the way.
Thanks Don

Guy,
I think the EPS1 setup might be a good entry for the FAQ board. What do you think? There are a few good posts with relevant info, but given the interest in the topic and the still widely available and cost effective ESP1s around, it would probably be a popular entry.

That sure would be nice. I get mine in a day or two. Is it possible to have one of these print from a serial bobcat or print to a file?
